OP here. Does Andy actually like the fandoms he gets into? Was he every really a fan of Supernatural or Harry Potter? Does he just fake it or does he really get into a fandom and model his life around it? For example years ago I saw a tv movie set in a boarding school and loved it and instantly decided I HAD to go to boarding school. Even had one all picked out. My parents pointed out they couldn't afford it and that was that.
Andy can write. Why doesn't he try a career from that? Why doesn't he try? Can he even cook? Can he actually sew or does he not even try? He spoofs his way through life and has done so for years. I can recall reading about him on Fandom Wank and Turmiel's LJ. Surely at some point he has to just stop? His family must have compassion fatigue at this point.

"Does Andy actually like the fandoms he gets into? Was he every really a fan of Supernatural or Harry Potter?"
In general, yes. You can't invest the insane number of hours Andy poured into SPN analysis without some kind of passion for it. Harry Potter was a little different. Andy used HP as a blueprint for his fanfic, which he seemed to view as his own little sub-fandom. He clearly had a passion for his fanfiction. The actual books, not so much.
"Does he just fake it or does he really get into a fandom and model his life around it?"
He gets into it, but not the way you or I would. He uses fiction as a model for his escapist fantasies, and immerses himself in them as much as he can get away with.
"Andy can write. Why doesn't he try a career from that? Why doesn't he try?"
Andy can write *fanfiction* - ie, he can write a passable story about characters people are already invested in, in a world they already are interested in. Coming up with an original work is a whole other ballgame.
The main problem is that while Andy has passion for things that he's interested in, he has no discipline whatsoever. He can't even bring himself to change cat litter, or clean a pile of dead flies from his sink. This doesn't seem to be a passing thing that happens during boughts of depression; nearly everyone who's been around him has said that Andy is just slovenly and messy to the nth degree. Writing professionally requires huge amounts of discipline - which means completing tasks regularly, even when you don't want to. That's beyond Andy.
"Can he even cook? Can he actually sew or does he not even try?"
If you believe the people who have eaten his food, Andy's cooking "skills" are braggadocio and nothing more. He can sew, but Molly's reports seem to indicate he doesn't sew particularly well. I think he tries with both, but again, his lack of discipline and penchant for bullshitting hinder him from making much real progress. Remember that Andy's #1 goal with anything is praise and attention. The actual quality of what he produces matters way less than the admiration he gains from it.
"He spoofs his way through life and has done so for years. I can recall reading about him on Fandom Wank and Turmiel's LJ. Surely at some point he has to just stop?"
I personally don't believe Andy is capable of living as a healthy, productive member of society. No, I don't think he'll ever stop. Andy's problems are the result of deep-seated personality traits - personality disorders, actually. These are *very* difficult to treat, and in fact, many psychiatrists won't treat people with ASPD on the basis that therapy only makes them better manipulators.

As a writer, Andy is excellent at rhetoric and self-aggrandisement but a lot weaker at prose. He does some nice scenes and visuals, but there's no solid craft to it. Belfast-born Seamus' over the top Oirish accent was hysterically bad for example. Most of his flaws he could fix if he worked at them and had any real interest in people outside of manipulating them.
To be honest, the unwillingness to work at things is Andy's major problem with creativity. Assuming he was a young wunderkind, he seems to have gotten so used to things coming easily to him that he's unwilling to work or study how other people do things he's not good at. His costume degree is the first thing that he's really put his shoulder to, but a few of his 'last minute project pulled off!' posts make me wonder how he did with the day to day of it.
Plus, I doubt very much that Andy could deal with an editor or any sort of creative oversight.

I think a big part of Andy's issues here is that he doesn't particularly enjoy these activities; he just enjoys the praise that "mastering" them brings him.
Andy doesn't want to make a perfect boiled egg or a light and fluffy omelet or develop his knife skills. No one is going to be wowed by that. He wants to stuff peacocks with guinea pigs and mix yogurt with gin and cucumber puree and use a half cup of spices in his two quarts of liquid, because he doesn't care about making anything edible. He just wants someone to look at him and say "WOW! You know how to do things I don't know! You're so amazing at things!"
Same thing with the sewing. He didn't want to make Molly's friend a decent costume that fit her body and could survive normal wear. He wanted to be developing thirty fully integrated space assassin costumes. So he throws things together, hot glues shit and produces trash, because no one is going to worship him for doing actual pedestrian sewing.

No, he hasn't finished his capstone project.
Okay, so this is a weird one, but I don't know who else to ask.
There is an Andy Blake-style cult leader who lives not far from me (though in a different state). He's been doing this shit since the mid-90s, he's a convicted felon, he's awful and has shown no signs of changing, in part because his non-cult life has been even less successful than Blake's.
My one comfort, as I've tracked this guy, is that things seemed to have collapsed on him, and he wasn't able to keep it up anymore. He's 40, he's addicted to opioids, he looks awful, I figured maybe his time was over.
But no. He's getting into the con scene as a volunteer, using panels and cosplaying to help propagate his identities. (He's Kylo Ren, Rick Grimes, and Tony Stark now. Yes, all at the same time.)
I work in a lot of these cons--though not the ones HE'S in. Yet. But it gives me chills to think this guy (a guy who's been arrested for threatening people with weapons, who threatened to stab an ex-follower for asking him to pay the phone bill) getting a victim base through volunteering. My hope is that his behavior will be so awful he'll get blackballed relatively quickly... but what if he doesn't? What if he actually manages to rise from his shitty ashes, a new phoenix of flaming turds?
What the hell do I do? Any advice, TF-talkers? This guy is fucking dangerous, I don't want him sneaking back into fandom through the back door of con volunteering!

SA; forgot the title line last time
Also, to help muddy the water, this guy has used many different names. His arrests are under the his legal identity, while his volunteering identity is the Tony Stark identity. This makes it all the more confusing to explain to folks that they're the same guy, since there are no photos with his arrest records; I'm not sure the con staff realize what his legal name even IS.

Where is Andy now? LA? He keeps on about wanting a chance and a job and friends and he keeps getting them and messing them up. What happened to the posse? Is Meg still a friend? Part me feels pity for Andy what a sad lonely life he has and will have. Will he still be up to this when he is 90? I'm suprised he hasn't ended up on Dr Phil, being exposed as someone who catfishes people. Who is funding him? What'll happen when his upper middle class parents pass?
That was interesting. Thank you.
Rat him out to the volunteer coordinators of the spaces he’s trying to join. Anonymously, if you want to. Say that you’ve noticed one of their volunteers looks like a criminal who goes by several aliases with a history of violence in fandom spaces, and send them to his arrest record or some other record of his legal history. Don’t minimize; actually use the phrase “aggravated assault with a deadly weapon” or whatever the charge was that led to the arrest. Tell them point blank that you are concerned for the safety of his fellow volunteers and, even though tattling on people’s substance abuse problems sucks, tell them that you are concerned that his illegal drug use will put the entire convention at risk. If he’s using a fake name, it shouldn’t be difficult for the people running the convention to ask their volunteers for a valid drivers license or other state ID for liability purposes.
This guy sounds like a much more clear-cut danger then Andrew Blake, honestly — Andy is a chronic abuser and manipulator, including manipulatinf violent people like Brittany Quinn’s ex and potentially violent people like Chris C. But he doesn’t seem to be a risk for committing immediate physical violence against anyone— if this guy tried to stab someone over a phone bill, he’s an immediate danger and the people supervising him need to know.

He's still in or near LA.
Most of the core posse members are still friends with each other and Andy. Meg is still his friend and roommate (she's alone in their VA apartment for the summer).
I have no idea what Andy will be doing in his old age, but if he keeps repeating the same behavior patterns that he's cycled through for the last 20 years, he will eventually end up alone. The social engineering skills that he used to brag about are much easier to exercise when you're young and cute.
He said in his Facebook "apology" that he has a real job with a regular paycheck and is living somewhere in which he pays rent. I'm willing to bet that he's still sponging off someone, but in spite of last month's declaration that everything was ruined forever, it is likely that he does have some kind of work again. (Having a job has never precluded him from leaning heavily on someone else for his living expenses, and he often spins his stories around a grain of truth.) All I know is that when I read the line about having a job and paying rent, I immediately thought of what he did when Abbey left him in 2007:
"She guided me to the car as [Andy] began to scream; that same hideous, chilling, keening wail that he terrorized all of us with in the cult. Now no longer the howl of some supernatural anguish, but that of a thwarted, monstrous child. I got into the car and Mom drove us the hell away from there." (Operation Catch and Release, Part 2 (https://kumquatwriter.wordpress.com/2011/11/08/operation-catch-and-release-part-2/))
"According to my mother, his parents said after the screaming fit when I left, Andy stood up completely calmly, went to the phone, and got a job - don't know if it was his job back, or if it was something else." (Abbey's AMA (https://kumquatwriter.livejournal.com/45780.html?thread=78548#t78548))

Thanks, nonnie. I have taken your advice and done just that. I never thought I'd fucking say this, but THANK GOD this dude got fucking arrested for a blatantly violent charge. Yeah, he weaseled his way out of jail time for it, but at least it makes it a lot easier to prove, and hopefully won't get bogged down in Geek Social Fallacies. I didn't end up even REFERENCING his cult activity, merely his arrests and his history of using fandom space to abuse. (I also said I was willing to give details on that, but would have to ask permission from the survivors first, out of respect for their privacy, which is true.)
I'm sorry I didn't move sooner, but well. At least I've moved now, I guess.

Also, OMG just realized Bargain Bin Blake FUCKING BADGERED SOMEONE ON ABBEY'S FUCKING BLOG. (Here: https://kumquatwriter.wordpress.com/2011/11/08/operation-catch-and-release-part-2/#comment-2050 ) He didn't even respond to the right person.
Jesus Christ, dude, how sad are you that you fucking obsessively track anyone who ever says anything bad about you, even random fucking BLOG comments from years ago? What is WRONG with you?

TB's comments that Oirish Andy was claimed to be an "alter"
(Anonymous) 2018-07-18 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)This is new to me. Anyone else aware of this claim? I've never seen Andy address his lies about being Irish or their exposure.
More importantly, who could possibly buy this? This means an alter was supposedly running Andy's tumblr - and acting exactly like the current Andy - all the way into 2012. This alter would also be responsible for Sluagh. Does Andy 2 "remember" his life as Andy 1? Or does he experience it as missing time, as he claimed with other alters? How does he explain the fact that Oirish Andy acted exactly like him?
What happened to the claim that Andy 1 - at the time, the "current" Andy - was an alter Amy Player "gave her life" to (but he had no knowledge of "her"?) Remember, this was the Andy that demanded his parents accept him as their son.
If this is the explanation he's selling, how does anyone in Andy's life know the current Andy isn't an alter identical to Andy with a few specific "delusions" (that just so happen to coincide with his interests)?
I am struggling to understand how anyone could possibly believe this.

In retrospect, I thought Andy was still claiming to be Irish even after he was "cured". Can anyone square this tangled web?

Re: TB's comments that Oirish Andy was claimed to be an "alter"
(Anonymous) 2018-07-18 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)I don’t think that was a weirdly disseminated public lie. It was just one he shared privately to try and dissuade people from doing too much digging into his past/confronting ‘Andy’ about what he’d done under other names. I was never sure if it was intended to draw the recipient in, to bind them to Andy with shared secret, or if Andy had shared a number of extreme stories with a bunch of different people to which tale leaked.
Irish Andy was never an alter, I don’t think. Just ridiculous to the point of parody.

Parts of this sound eerily similar to another cult leader I know of (who I think is in Arizona, now?), though he *did* spend time in jail for threatening someone with a weapon.
As far as I know he's still spinning the same nonsense, but since his current preying grounds are fundamentalist christian circles, it's not a space where I have any credibility to spread warnings.

I swear, all these chucklefucks work from the same playbook. I suspect it's because cult leading is so hard on the extreme end of human asshattery that there are only a few ways to do it effectively, so they end up all coming off similar. Sorry you've encountered one yourself though, ech.
(Also, heard back from the con. Said they hadn't known the charges, unsurprisingly, and that they'll take it into account. I think the con is safe. Thanks, TF-talk!)

WHOA that is bizarre. I wonder how he found the post. So he's Neo, Kylo Ren, Rick Grimes, AND Tony Stark? I'm almost impressed.
Re: TB's comments that Oirish Andy was claimed to be an "alter"
(Anonymous) 2018-07-19 07:14 am (UTC)(link)I remember he wrote to someone (necromommycon?) that the Andy that the Daydians knew was an alter (not his words, but his meaning), and that he was letting "him" take over because he was so warm and generous and good. And Daydian Andy didn't know anything about Amy Player, VB, Jordan Wood or BOE. Or maybe he did know, but he thought Amy was his sister? He was just this amazing other person who really believed he'd done all the things he told the Daydians he'd done. He didn't even know he was an alter.
And, of course, he was Irish.
Lb_lee did a pretty good take down if how that's not how alters work, if I'm remembering right.

TB was kind enough to answer my questions about this here:
http://theteablogger.tumblr.com/post/176043577342/ive-never-heard-andy-publicly-comment-on-his
My next questions are:
1. How did Andy maintain the "delusion" his grandfather had an Irish accent while living with the man, who did not have one?
2. How did Andy (supposedly) get through his grandfather's funeral without realizing something was seriously amiss? His obituary makes it clear he wasn't Irish, and his life must have been discussed at some length during his funeral or in the days afterward. Did he hallucinate an alternate version of the funeral that was a good ol' fashioned Irish wake, and immediately forget the real one?
Not a question, but:
3. TB points out Andy was still claiming to be Irish in 2013/2014, a year or two after supposedly being fully integrated and lucid. I'd love to be a fly on the wall when and if a conversation about his lack of Irish ancestry came up with a true believer.

Re: TB's comments that Oirish Andy was claimed to be an "alter"
(Anonymous) 2018-07-19 09:25 am (UTC)(link)I mean, the answers to questions one and two are, he didn't. He was lying. You might as well be asking how Andy walked on the moon. He just didn't do any of those things.
I don't think anyone who believed Andy's story would think of these things, let alone ask him. But if they did, he'd probably claim his mental illness made him hear things weren't there or he believed evil forces were smearing his grandfather's memory, or some other nonsense.
But it's a moot point because he never believed either he or his grandfather was Irish. It's just him telling a lie to explain away more lies he told earlier.

Re: TB's comments that Oirish Andy was claimed to be an "alter"
(Anonymous) 2018-07-19 10:26 am (UTC)(link)There's a fairly good lie baked in to the story. 'OBVIOUSLY, my grandfather couldn't let anyone know his true, noble Irish ancestry. He was on the run from the IRA/UDA/FBI and had to hide his connections from everyone but his closest family. I'm only telling YOU this, because I can completely trust you. If anyone tracked us down we'd still be danger in case grandfather had told us about how *blah blah* had *blahed* in the *blah*'.
