continued Thatfucker discussion

Since we've been kicked off FFA for the week, please feel free to continue the anon discussion here. Apologies if this is a big flop - I've never made a DW community before!

The rules are vaguely the same as they are over on FFA. Please refrain from being too much of an asshole, making personal attacks, posting identifying information or engaging in transfail.

ETA: If there's information you'd like to see archived (journal/blog posts related to Andy, etc.), please dump it here and link to it from the main post for discussing.

If they're talking about their own experience with a specific person who skipped their meds, I wouldn't call that an obession, nor an attempt to claim it's a symptom of bipolar.

+1, considering it's usually in the context of Andy going off his meds during GISHWHES.

ayrt As a one-off, I wouldn't have brought it up, but every. single. time. we start discussing diagnoses someone brings up how Andy reminds them of bipolar friends and family members "skipping meds to get this important project/paper done". Like, it's the fact that "important project/paper" almost always comes into it too.

I'm just starting to find it creepy that one, or possibly more, anon(s) is this fixated on bringing the same thing up over and over.

DA

seems kinda insulting to compare people to Andy on the basis of mental illness :(

like maybe your relative with BPD is a creepy abuser, maybe compare them based on that (like, skipping meds for whatever reason is not by itself an abusive behavior? though it can totally be)

ayrt Yeah, like, I know I've responded to someone using this same "skipping meds for important project/paper" line at least twice to explain why I don't think it's bipolar, I've seen other people respond to them the same way, and yet, here they are again, in a thread full to the brim of people explaining why they don't think it's bipolar, saying that his skipping meds reminds them of bipolar relatives.

I'm getting creeped out by their need to bring their bipolar friends and relatives into it, in a way that indicates they think he has bipolar, solely based on something that isn't even a symptom of bipolar.

How is this creepy, exactly? I can see frustrating, irritating... but creepy?

Like, how is this scary to you?

You know, nevermind, it doesn't even matter. I don't want to start wank over this when this comm is doing so well.

Well, I have bipolar, so I automatically imagine being the relative of someone who will repeatedly, and doggedly, link my illness to a serial, self-confessed rapist and abuser, based on such an insignificant link, despite so many people telling them that the link is nonsensical.

Like, I wouldn't say I'm 'scared' as such, but it creeps me out on behalf of their friends and relatives to know that someone those people presumably trust is this single-minded about that link as to bring it up so fucking often.

MODS - I suggest you move this thread to Gloves Off, or monitor for upset.

I really doubt they're discussing Thanfiction with their relatives.

I have depression. Like bipolar, Andy's claimed it as a diagnosis in the past, and has even said it contributed to his abuse of others. Whether he really has it, or whether people think he does, doesn't matter. Depression in and of itself doesn't make you an abuser, though I certainly believe it could exacerbate the negative behavior of people who are abusive.

Similarly, sharing a mental illness with an abuser cannot and doesn't "link" you to them.

Let's say for argument Andy does have depression like I do. Does that really say anything about me? I don't think it does. Maybe I'm just being a Pollyana here, but hypothetically if someone brought up how their depressed friend shared x behaviour with Andy, I wouldn't assume they were trying to imply anything negative about that person, beyond the one unhealthy behavior.

As I said before, it's that it comes up so often, when the (probably single) anon has been told over and over that it's unlikely to be bipolar for reasons X, Y, and Z. And yet still they pop up saying that Andy reminds them of their bipolar friends and relatives. For me, they've done it so often as to cross from "wanting to share an observation", into "wanting to make sure everyone knows".

If it was once or twice, I'd agree with you about the innocence. Since it's a lot more than that, they're moving into different territory.

I (belatedly) agree with you, anon - this thread has slowed down but since it's been getting an on/off trickle of comments over the past couple of days I'm going to go ahead and move it over for continuation.

Continued discussion of mental illnesses Andy might have or claims to have goes here:
