continued Thatfucker discussion

Since we've been kicked off FFA for the week, please feel free to continue the anon discussion here. Apologies if this is a big flop - I've never made a DW community before!

The rules are vaguely the same as they are over on FFA. Please refrain from being too much of an asshole, making personal attacks, posting identifying information or engaging in transfail.

ETA: If there's information you'd like to see archived (journal/blog posts related to Andy, etc.), please dump it here and link to it from the main post for discussing.

You're making AYRT's point, by arguing that the context (fandom) would need to be changed for the story to work. It's precisely the normalcy, the averageness, of the context, which makes the story unbelievable. If you change the context to one where readers are used to grandiose manipulations, you take away what makes this whole madness so baffling.

Oh! Sorry.

I guess it's really the fandom part that's the sticking point for me, because you'd have to allow commentary on the works themselves. That could potentially run into copyright issues. Perhaps it could work if it was, say, about fans of the Arthur Conan Doyle Sherlock Holmes stories, or about some H.P. Lovecraft fan group gone bad?

But yes, you have a good point. Thanks for pointing that out. :S

Oh, I see! That's a good point.

Lovecraft might give the wrong vibes to too many people right from the start, in a "Well, they are *horror* fans, so a few horrible fans are to be expected" way. On the contrary, ACD Sherlock Holmes has a much more benign and 'respectable' reputation, plus it would fit with the whole "manipulative genius" theme, so I think that would be a great substitute.

I think some parts of fandom are mainstream enough now that you could use, say, comic books, with knockoff versions of Marvel and DC heroes. Although it's still not quite as respectable as Holmes, you're right.
