continued Thatfucker discussion

Since we've been kicked off FFA for the week, please feel free to continue the anon discussion here. Apologies if this is a big flop - I've never made a DW community before!

The rules are vaguely the same as they are over on FFA. Please refrain from being too much of an asshole, making personal attacks, posting identifying information or engaging in transfail.

ETA: If there's information you'd like to see archived (journal/blog posts related to Andy, etc.), please dump it here and link to it from the main post for discussing.

When Andy was pulling his shit on luvscharlie, he put on an outrageous good ol' boy Southern accent. This was at the same time he had an Oirish accent for other people.

Incidentally, as a bona fide linguist, I can tell you unequivocally that his claims about having an Irish accent b/c his grandfather raised him blah blah blah are complete bullshit. That's not how accents work. This is even leaving aside the research that a nonnie on FFA did that destroyed all those claims about his Irish grandpa and heritage.

Honestly if he had picked up a phrasing or a word, it would have been that much more believable.

Most children who are raised by people with accents will pick up a thing or two.

Like my grandparents are of french extraction but grew up in Canada. I have lived in NYC for over 20 years but still say u-boot (about) with a Canadian accent. But that's about it other than some colorful phrases in french.

Picking up the accent whole cloth is not kosher unless raised in the country of the accent.

Even my french cousins who live in Canada now don't sound French anymore.

See, I'm from a place where Irish-based accents are all over the damn place, so Good Ole Boy would sound a lot more exotic to my ears. (Was that true for Luvscharlie, I wonder? Was there some reason a Southern accent would have been unfamiliar to her, I mean?)

I'm not sure, but we do know Andy varies his stories and tactics from person to person. If he thought the GOB accent would work better at hooking her, apparently he'd use it, even though that meant switching between Oirish and GOB which should have been a sign something weird was going on..

Now you've got me imagining Andy imitating GOB Bluth, nonnie. It's... it's honestly the best laugh I've had all day.

I just watched the documentary on that French impostor guy which had a linguist who went on about how impossible his convoluted story about his accent was and I was like, "This is just like Andy!"
