continued Thatfucker discussion

Since we've been kicked off FFA for the week, please feel free to continue the anon discussion here. Apologies if this is a big flop - I've never made a DW community before!

The rules are vaguely the same as they are over on FFA. Please refrain from being too much of an asshole, making personal attacks, posting identifying information or engaging in transfail.

ETA: If there's information you'd like to see archived (journal/blog posts related to Andy, etc.), please dump it here and link to it from the main post for discussing.

As I've written before, Andy actually *frightens* me. And I say this as someone who had a friend who was involved in "the posse" and who DID get stuck picking up the pieces when she was basically frozen out (for reasons she still doesn't understand, and blamed herself for--though not so much anymore.)

This might sound awful, but I honestly wish he were as mentally ill as he claims to be, b/c most people that sick can't get it together enough to do any real damage. Knowing he's not scares me all the more--because I don't doubt that if Andy really did pull it together, he could be another Jim Jones. Or worse. Dismissing him by saying he's "small-time" or that "that stuff was x years ago" or he "was sick but now he's totes better" does a disservice...not just to the people who are currently picking up pieces of their own shattered lives or someone else's, but to the fact that under the right circumstances I think Andy could be really, really, fucking dangerous. Am I giving him more credit than he deserves? Probably. But as a rule, you're better off overestimating someone's capacity for danger than underestimating it.

Always rebooting. Never progress. I honestly don't think he has it in him to "progress"--progress is hard enough for "normal" people w.o his baggage who have, you know, things like empathy, a conscience, a desire to grow, etc. Andy? Yeah, no.

ITA. L. Ron Hubbard didn't publish Dianetics until he was 39, and Scientology as a cult didn't really pick up steam until years afterward. Dismissing Andy because he hasn't done something huge YET is a big mistake. He's got most of his lifetime ahead of him.
