Andy didn't password protect his tumblr until about a year ago. Everything was public until then.

Fuck protecting this guy's ID if he's a publicly known animal abuser. People need to be warned about him as much as they do about Andy.

I mean, to be fair, that's not just an Andy thing. I've known other T-guys (and BEEN that T-guy) who can only engage with men as competition or liabilities. (I.e., "this guy is who I wish I could be, and that makes me ANGRY," or, "this guy is who I fear I am, and that makes me FURIOUS.") For someone who's as deeply invested as Andy is in performing maleness, I'm not surprised that he'd rather nobody infringe on his act.

Fictional men don't have that problem, because they're not real.

Just remembered I had this...

I was recently going through some of my very old reblogs (stupid Tumblr NSFW ban) and I found this one from 2013:

http://fuckingrecipes.tumblr.com/post/48970876311/achievement-unlocked-grocery-shopping

And like, I reblogged it when I was a young thing and didn't know much about Andy OR cooking, but now... holy shit, I'm laughing. The PROJECTION.

No, you don’t actually need sun-dried tomatoes, capers, and saffron in your basic pantry. Those are for cooks. If you’re reading this honestly because you need to learn, you’re not one yet.

I don't know a single person who is simultaneously at a basic "I have no idea how to buy food" level and thinks that saffron is a basic pantry ingredient. You know who is? Andy!

Search “3 ingredient meals” or “4 ingredient meals” or “super easy dinners,” and then just see what looks tasty to you, putting priority on things that 1) have a lot of fruits and veggies, 2) don’t use a lot of super-processed foods or stuff you’ve known is unhealthy since you were six, 3) use mostly things from your pantry list, 4) doesn’t look like it’s a difficulty level for actually making that’s beyond your skills, and 5) don’t use things that are out of your price range like lobster.

(emphasis mine)

This post is aimed at people who have essentially no cooking skills, the kind of person who, in Andy's mind, just go straight for takeout when left to their own devices. People who default to takeout are not going to immediately jump to making their own lobster bisque. You know who would? Andy "roast guinea pig" Blake!

Also, maybe this is just me, but speaking as someone who both likes cooking but also lived in a small apartment with three roommates, a lot of the stuff he denotes as "basic" is actually not basic or easy at all. A "sixteen herbs and spices" kit at Walmart? Bare minimum $20. That would have been a third of my biweekly food budget, and I'm not a terribly poor person. Onions, carrots, and celery together go into a mirepoix, which is only basic if you're regularly cooking stuff that requires a mirepoix. If, like me, you don't, the onions might be useful, but the carrots and celery are only helpful if you want carrot and celery sticks. (He also assumes everyone has the same tastes that he does: ketchup and mayo aren't "basic" if you don't eat them)

And the whole thing is in this twee excited-fan-talk, so you never notice that it's condescending as hell.

"There’s nothing wrong with having a treat for dessert…it just gets kind of skeevy when you accidentally have eight treats…three times a day. Really, you should be paying attention to serving sizes in general. It can be super eye opening. It’s kind of amazing how much weight some of my friends have lost just by actually eating for one."

Not as skeevy as body-shaming, Andy.

I'm really impressed by how incredibly patronising and assholeish every word of that post is. Like, I am very much the target audience for a post like that, in that I am an aggressively bad cook who hates cooking, food shopping or thinking about food. And yet, all I want to do by the end of that post is to tell him where to shove his fucking raisins and shortening. "This can be done. Even by you.", "you don’t need - and your body doesn’t need - the “snack aisle”", "…and see? Surprisingly easy." - FUCK YOU, ASSHOLE! I will live on rotting Chinese takeout and dry cereal for the rest of my life rather than follow a single word of advice in this post.

YES, ALL OF THIS.

And the word "skeevy" implies that eating what Andy considers to be too many snacks is creepy and gross, as opposed to "maybe a good idea, maybe not, but none of Andy's business either way".

What? Sun-dried tomatoes are great! I eat them straight, like potato chips, or shove them in my scrambled eggs or boxed Mac and cheese after cutting them up with kitchen scissors. They're pricey, but so delicious! And I can chop them up without squirting juice and seeds all over myself.

The only time I ever used saffron was in a cocktail though. Fuck saffron, it costs your first born. I can get my sun-dried tomatoes at a reasonable price as long as I haunt the deli like the world's hungriest ghost, but even finding saffron was an adventure. Maybe I'm weird, I'm just a little perplexed Andy lumps the two together. Do I just have a really lucky affordable sun-dried tomato source or something?

Re: Just remembered I had this...

AYRT - I don't generally eat them whole, but I do like sundried tomato pesto if I get bored with normal basil pesto, and I like them more than normal tomatoes (raw tomatoes taste weird to me for unknown reasons). I'm also perplexed that they're lumped together with saffron. It's like saying, "You don't need vanilla extract or rosewater, those are for bakers," when vanilla extract is available at a reasonable price and goes in a lot of things and rosewater is an acquired taste and expensive as hell.

I dunno. We grew tomatoes and dried them in the dehydrator and they're great. You can also dry them in the oven. Or the sun. It's on Google somewhere no doubt.

For someone who has had to hustle/grift his entire adult life, Andy is remarkably, laughably bad at being frugal. I lived in poverty for 3 years and have only recently graduated to being simply "broke" and any of Andy's advice when it comes to money and life skills nearly makes my eyes roll out of my head (luckily I have insurance for that now).

Rosewater can be got cheap online or at any Middle Eastern/Levantine market. It's much less expensive than top-shelf vanilla extract.

Saffron is available fairly cheap (in saffron terms) at Costco. If you catch it on sale there, it's about $11 for a one-gram jar which will last probably forever, given that almost all recipes that call for it use tiny, tiny amounts. No, most people don't NEED saffron in their cupboard, but if you shop carefully it's not the ultra-expensive deal most folks think it is.

Oh man that pesto sounds gooooood. Recipe plz?

Raw tomatoes do have a different flavor though, I have to agree with you there. I like the flavor of sun-dried better too, though it's not like I HATE normal tomatoes or anything.

I like this recipe because it doesn't have pine nuts: http://www.lordbyronskitchen.com/sun-dried-tomato-pesto/

But if you are lazy, like me, you can also buy it jarred: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Classico-Sun-Dried-Tomato-Pesto-Sauce-and-Spread-Pasta-Sauce-8-1-oz-Jar/10307628

Yeah, I’ve always wondered about that. This is a bit of a #firstworldproblems critique, lol, but while he talks a lot about his expensive, sophisticated tastes, he rarely comes across as someone familiar with or even genuinely interested in luxury goods. Like, when he talks about these fantastic sophisticated meals he apparently loves it reads like a really random grab-bag of things that sound expensive or exotic - saffron! Lobster! Guinea pig! Peacock! I also remember him talking about how he and Brittany loved “couture” - never specific designers or any detail that would demonstrate an actual interest in fashion, just “couture”. I think he actually spelled it “coture” several times, which is why it stuck out to me.

Interesting point and I think it goes to his desperation to been seen as this totally sophisticated knowledgeable wunderkint that you should be proud to know you lucky so and so.

But esoteric knowledge gleaned from media and entertainment sources doth not translate into the practical.

Which is why he cannot boil an egg correctly and it takes him 27 pots to make one dish.

Even his claims of a working knowledge of various languages dies on the vine once you look at the stories he spins with them. Speaking languages that are no longer spoken and I can point you to a library of academic debate about how things might be pronounced based on what we have in the language today.

He may be ‘smart’ but he is not an intellectual and he desperately wants to be seen as one.
