Point the first: I think discussion about Meg oh tf-talk was surprisingly hostile and defensive. Unusually so, and I didn’t like it.

Where on tf-talk was discussion about Meg hostile and defensive? I did not see hostility and defensiveness toward her, I saw bluntness, disbelief, and concern. Was there a thread I missed where discussion got hostile?

From the same post: I don’t know if I’d say she was “attacked” or that all the comments were out of line.

Also: I don’t wholly agree with Meg’s take on her situation. That doesn’t mean she’s wrong, or that she “should” consider herself a “victim.” That means my experiences lead me to different conclusions, and that what I take away from her words isn’t necessarily what she meant. Who’s right? Doesn’t matter for now.

Which seems, to me, to suggest that if you disagree with Abbey on her interpretation of events, that's fine. She sounds to me like she's pretty well owning her reaction as just that -- her own. So I think those parts are worth quoting as well.

So what are you trying to distract us from, Andy?

In light of what's happened, I'd like to make a post acknowledging TB's awesome research skills and her contributions "to the cause", for lack of a better term. Any further criticism or discussion of recent events can take place in another thread.

I will miss her insights. Her own needs obviously come first, but I for one would love to see her back in the event that she changes her mind. No pressure, mind you.

Three things:

1. Please make an effort to title threads when creating one. It makes it a good deal easier both to track this post via email and to moderate discussion on our end. I know a lot of posters here are new to the DW/LJ-style anon meme format, so there might be a learning curve on this!

2. I'm going to be moving all personal commentary on AA bloggers, be it positive or negative, to the Gloves Off post unless there's a larger, relevant discussion that it's specifically pertinent to and embedded in (This is obviously going to be a judgment call/grey area, so please bear with me here). I'm getting a sense that now that we have our very own discussion forum we're beginning to develop a typical fandom-style approach to thanfiction and have started treating AA bloggers like typical fandom BNFs. A lot of this is going to be unavoidable, but I don't think it needs to continue to this extent. (Edit: I'll be moving most threads, simply freezing a couple others if they're one-off comments or old threads that haven't been replied to in a day or so. This is to save time for me, feel free to move things over to Gloves Off yourselves if you see I haven't done it for a particular thread.)

3. Namespace bloggers, please be judicious in your signoff use. Obviously there are many times it has been important and valuable to know who the poster is (particularly for those describing firsthand experience with Andy), but ultimately this is an anon meme and much of what is posted here is simple commentary. Note that this is NOT meant to discourage Q&As or factual testimony regarding Andy!

I'm going to go through and start moving stuff to Gloves Off right now. Please leave any feedback here (or PM one of the mods), especially if you disagree with any of these points or have an alternate suggestion.

If I got that right, Snape is a sadistic bad guy in the DAYDverse, right? Then I have to point out that he canonically ALREADY got everything he could dream of where Neville is concerned: he was Neville's greatest fear at one point. Anything else would only be icing on the cake.

Also, the convoluted way in which so much of this is written makes my head hurt.

cosplay warnings

I wasn't sure if this should go in gloves off so my apologies to the mods if this is too invasive to post here.

Andy has been pretty passionate about cosplay and attending cons lately. He makes a decent cosplay, and I'm sure young adults of the like he targets will be completely awed by his "skill" and his personality. Do you guys think we should try circulating warning posts for cons he will attend? I've noticed people are pretty quick to warn people about his roleplaying, but not about offline stuff.

Progress or Reboot?

I can't tell if the latest posts (calm mention of Brittany, school stuff, claiming to have moved past needing to be special) are indications of actual maturity, or just signposts indicating the flavor of his next persona: mature hardworking Andy, experienced and etc.

I'm willing to assume it's Progress, but if so, it's Progress founded on very shaky bases. He still hasn't taken true responsibility for the harm he's done, and he's still lying about really big stuff (like pretending to have schizophrenia). That doesn't mean it can't be Progress still, because Progress is Progress as long as there's progress in as little as just one small area. But it does mean that he can't be trusted still.

Only time will tell whether it's finally Progress or just yet another Reboot. I'm not holding my breath, but I'm hoping anyway.

cult language

slightly ot (although i'm pretty sure andy himself has done this before) and i'm aware that this is a red flag that has be considered in tandem with other warning signs when you're dealing with people in person

but what kinds of conversational red flags pop up for you when you're listening to a group like the bagenders or the daydians talk to each other?

having been previously involved with a similar group, one major tell for me is flippant references to other cults/cult mindset/famous cases as a disclaimer before speaking

examples:
1) not to get all heavenly creatures over here but...
2) yeah i don't mean to sound like i drank the koolaid here but...

in my experience, people were using jokes like that to preemptively deflect accusations of unhealthy or manipulative behavior (or of being on the receiving end of that behavior). like, "hey, i'm self-aware that this sounds skeevy but the fact that i'm aware and actively lampshading the skeeviness is meant to indicate that it's actually okay!"

when it comes from someone in the group who is not the andy/ringleader-cum-abuser figure it also reads to me as "i'm educated about this kind of cult case and therefore i believe i'm not at risk"

what other conversational tics and in-group signaling pings your cult-behavior radar, anons?

Yeah, this is weird. Why not ask the people who own/are associated with the actual building he's so worried about disrespecting? Tumblr skews highly liberal/progressive, and there responses are unlikely to reflect the actual values of a mosque in Virginia.

But at the risk of sounding overly supportive, I hope he gets enormously caught up in cosplay, because roleplaying and pretending and dressing up are the (good) essence of Andy. Lying about who he is IS who he is, now, and if he could just learn to stop pretending to care about other people and then dumping them the rest would be inconsequential.
