New 'Gloves Off' Post Announcement

This community was founded as a reaction to thanfiction-related threads being censored and shut down in fail-fandomanon, and as moderators our focus is on fostering open discussion while adhering to the spirit of the "don't be that much of an asshole" rule that has worked so well for FFA for so many years.

As the FFA mods have pointed out a few times, thanfiction discussion is incredibly difficult to moderate - aside from the fact that it involves actual people rather than fiction, it's also tied to some sticky subject areas such as gender identity, sexuality, and abuse. Conversation can frequently veer into territory that is emotionally fraught or "grey," in that participants can strongly disagree on whether an opinion or piece of analysis is problematic/victim-blaming/*faily/etc.

Yesterday (http://tf-talk.dreamwidth.org/272.html?thread=183056#cmt183056) we discussed how, as a community, we'd like to handle these kinds of discussions. Based on that feedback we have decided to open up a second post, roughly along the lines of FFA's religion/politics/personal post.

This post will be less moderated than the main post of tf-talk. Basically, it will not be monitored for wank. It will however still be moderated for slurs, doxxing, blatant trolling, and extreme personal attacks.

If a moderator believes a thread in the main post is veering too far towards contention, they will freeze the relevant subthread and transfer it (via link) to the "gloves off" post. This isn't meant to shut down discussion, but rather to move it to a space where members can make an informed decision whether to continue to participate. We don't expect to wind up using this post very often, but it should solve the problem of over/under-moderation for many of us.

Aside from mod-moved threads from the main post, anyone is welcome to create a thread in the "gloves off" post and post a link to it in the main post with a brief explanation of the content being linked to.

Abbey, would you be willing to talk more about the "club"? Was it all Andy's idea? What was the original intention? Was it financially motivated or was it a way of Andy trying to get more followers or to control the people around him?

Saw this and yeah, I'm willing. It's my evening off and I'm avoiding cleaning the kitchen.

The organization was Andy's idea, but it wasn't a bad one. Things were getting pretry out of control among costumed performers ("Hollywood Ambassadors" as we were hopefully nicknamed by the Hollywood Entertainment District office). The job was entirely unregulated. All you had to do was show up in costume and pose with tourists and collect cash tips. Yes, really it was glorified panhandling, but there were a lot of really good performers who honestly delighted visitors. Thing is, Hollywood Boulevard is a giant letdown for tourists. There are a handful of kitchy attractions (like the wax museum and the various "Celebrity Home" tours) and the stars and handprints... and beyond that a lot of stripper stores and head shops. Having characters and celebrity look-alikes to take pictures with was legitimately adding to the experience.

That said, there was getting to be a ridiculous excess of performers, many of whom were dirty, aggressive, or dangerously unstable. Add to that several characters who were VERY aggressive in asking for money - a huge (and illegal) issue. We were NOT allowed to set prices or demand money - we could only say that we worked for tips.

Since the LAPD was starting to crack down on the characters, the "job" was in real danger of being made illegal - and after we left, it WAS outlawed for a time (though the ban was later recinded). There were a number of us who were quite professional in our behavior and took pride in our work - and took great exception to characters who not only made us look bad, but who cost us income - bad characters = fewer tips for everyone.

We were popular - well, I was. I don't just say that because of what I know about Andy's true behavior, I've been back twice to visit since then and am in touch with several of my fellow ambassadors to this day. They liked ME. And Andy was plenty good enough to be part of the unofficial "professionals." In fact, Andy showed every costume weapon to the LAPD and had them directly approved for use on the Boulevard.

Anyway, the LAPD had called a massive meeting of all the characters to lay out what the laws and rules for our "job" were. We stayed after and talked to one of the lead officers (Mike Shea, who is in the documentary I linked to in the parent thread). We floated the idea of setting up a quasi-union, with rules they'd approved, to give the officers on patrol a level of confidence in the "good" performers.

There was no significant money involved - we asked for a $5 membership fee to cover the cost of photocopying the "official guidelines" and of a button to indicate membership. We paid the expense of copying and buying button supplies ourselves up front. We about broke even and kept receipts until we left the street to be sure.

The "rules" were overly detailed - much like the uniform guidelines Andy later published as a part of DAYD. we had a few meetings and even had a "governing board." It was a legit effort to protect ourselves and our livelihood, nothing more.

Andy didn't *need* a club to get control over other performers. There were people who almost joined his channeling cult as it was, but this organization came along late enough that it was irrelevant. It was a last ditch effort to keep our jobs legal and reasonably lucrative.

It failed. In part because Andy made it overly complex, but mostly because it was an unsustainable system to begin with. It was less than a year later that we ended up leaving.

"We have lost our first" seems like such a gross fucking way to end this, like he's trivializing her death by comparing them to all of his Dayd nonsense. Again conflating fiction and reality and doing it deliberately; this is a running theme with him. He's done it many times in the SPN fandom (comparing his relationship with Brittany to Destiel; using fandom oriented language/references in unrelated posts) and it always pings me as phoney. Just a way Andy can steer the conversation back to himself and reel more people in.

And I can't tell you how much the 'M'Bidney' thing sickens me, because it stinks of something one of Andy's childlike "alters" might have named her and in the context of the eulogy it's so, so gross.

This is the biggest pile of utter steaming bullshit I have ever read, and it shows. It reads like a lie; like he's studied the most popular sexual harassment story posts like this on Tumblr and made himself a list of things to cover. Pure note-bait, nothing more.

Channeling questions

The channeling aspect of all this is one of the most intriguing/disturbing parts for me. The fact that Andy had 100+ alters and kept track of all of them -- even, as Abbey said somewhere, waking up from a deep sleep in-character -- is just so bizarre to me and I'd like to know more about this behavior.

My questions are:

1) Is there any evidence TF is still engaged in channeling? And what was the most recent confirmed incident?

2) Without trying to be insensitive, is channeling, as Andy describes it, connected to any particular mental illness or disorder?

3) What's the motive? To feel special? To make others think he's special? Keeping track of 100+ alters sounds fucking exhausting to me, and the way Abbey described it, it was hell being around him. So what's the motive for him? Elaborate roleplaying/larping that was enjoyable for him (even with all the work it involved) so he decided to rope other people into it?

I can answer this one, because as much as I hate to admit it, I operated very much like Andy re: channeling and "selling realities" when I was much younger.

Andy's main fix is control and fucking with people, but there's tons of ways to do that. Using fictional characters has a certain appeal in fandom, but it will also cost you a high number of people who will disconnect from you when the realize what's going on. There's also a good chance it will eventually get revealed outside your inner circle and make you a laughing stock. It's risky.

For those reasons, I don't think Andy just decided "Hey, fiction and alternate universes, good enough!" I think he's actually driven (as I was) to indulge in a very severe form of escapist fantasy. This actually isn't uncommon in fandom, where you can any number of people who believe they are fic-kin or therians or into "alternative universes" or any number of other things. What's different is his level of immersion and his ability to manipulate other people into enriching his fantasies. Andy wasn't just Jordan Wood online and to a couple of friends. He lived his whole life as Jordan Wood.

But I've gotten ahead of myself. People may not understand what I mean by "enriching the fantasy".

I'll share a personal story that I'm ashamed of now, but will demonstrate it pretty well, I think.

When I was about 9, I was babysitting my younger brother and got bored. Normal children will play pretend. What I did was tell my younger brother (age 7) that I heard noises outside the house. I gradually ramped up the tension until I told him I thought robbers were breaking in. I got a kitchen knife and told my brother to hide with me in the closet. We did, at which point he started to cry with fear. I wanted to laugh because I couldn't believe he believed what I was saying so strongly.

I also felt enough guilt that I called off the "game" at that point, though I never admitted what I had done. The thieves were simply "gone now, it's safe." This ability to feel guilt is what prevented me from turning into Andy Blake as an adult. Otherwise, I'm certain I would be very much like him.

I would later do similar things to my friends, involving fictional characters instead of robbers breaking into houses. It makes the fantasy so much more real, because they mirror it back to you, and they really, really believe it. The lies may not be real, but their emotional reactions are.

I knew this was what Andy was doing when I heard that he made Abbey & co tell him in detail why it was all true. Yeah, it demonstrates how convinced they are, which is reassuring that your game is running smoothly, but more importantly it helps you put the knowledge that it's all fake away in the dark little corner of your brain where you don't have to look at it. That knowledge is always there, but you can "forget" it for extended periods of time. If you're lying about your own past, you may tell the same story so often you "forget" it isn't true until you ponder it carefully. You want to feel like a hero who saves the world? You don't need to actually do it, if you're like Andy. Just get someone to look at you like you are. To tell you you are. Get them to believe it with such conviction you become that thing in their eyes.

Some people wonder whether Andy really believes his own lies. I don't think he does. Not really. Not the way Abbey did. Not the way Diamond did. When I was younger, it took me a while to figure out that not everyone has that little piece of hidden knowledge that tells them the yarn you're spinning together is all lies. I still have a harder time understanding people like Abbey than I do Andy, and that's not a pleasant thing to admit.

What you have to understand is that getting people to really buy this stuff is not intellectual per se, though being able to argue for the possibility certainly helps. You have to make them want to believe so strongly that they have to believe it. You can't do it with everyone, no matter how "good" you are. People need to be unfulfilled by a big large of reality or their lives before they'll accept a new one. And you have to feed it to them slowly, boiling the frog. The best way is to let them think it's their idea, as Andy did.

Breadcrumbs trails. They work.

1. Irish people usually call their language Irish when speaking English. Some people even take the position that calling it "Gaelic" is an offensive attempt to separate the language from the culture/nation-state.

2. "The Celts" were a collection of different peoples and tribes, often separated by land and sea, who were part of the same language group and shared some cultural elements. Why Seamus attributes what would almost certainly be Irish-specific magical practices to "the Celts" is beyond me. I suspect it's because in Andy's mind (and in the minds of many other people) the Celts are super-mysterious, ~*magical*~ people who are exotic enough to be interesting but still familiar to the layreader.

You know what I mean. People wearing robes in forests who disappeared with their magic into the mists of time, instead of a group who underwent linguistic and cultural changes.

I presume Seamus is using it in the second (ironically) non-Irish sense. Why a blue collar kid would be using an archaic 16th to 19th century term for a language he doesn't speak is beyond me. I assume because Andy has a kink for sprinkling his writing with terms that are unfamiliar to his readers to demonstrate how well-read he is.

Your happiness in a relationship depends greatly on your ability to get your needs heard and taken seriously. If these decisions are taken over by an abusive or controlling partner, you experience disappointment after disappointment, the constant sacrificing of your needs.

He, on the other hand, enjoys the luxury of a relationship where he rarely has to compromise, gets to do the things he enjoys, and skips the rest. He shows off his generosity when the stakes are low, so that friends will see what a swell guy he is. The abuser ends up with the benefits of being in an intimate relationship without the sacrifices that normally come with the territory. That’s a pretty privileged lifestyle.

Then Brittany (short version for the n00bs: flawless, amazing, my life partner, brutally murdered in spring 2011, no I’m never gonna be over it). She got her teeth into the album project and made it her baby. She believed in it, loved it passionately. She pulled in contacts, made deals, called up old friends like Bobby Singer trying to pull off a surprise party for a Big Bad. And it was working. She’d gotten about a half dozen professional musicians into it, lined up studio time, and even found a producer with professional equipment and experience.

And then she was murdered, two weeks before we were supposed to start recording.

It’s come to mean a lot more to me since; become a symbol of all the things she left unfinished.

So I went back to the DAYD facebook community to looked at the time before Brittany died. There WAS a flurry of wrock-related activity before her death, but none of it was from Brittany. NONE. It was entirely Andy:

Just had a thought, in light of Carlanime disclosing all these emails...

Andy makes a point of having his followers know each others secrets.

This doesn't just serve to bind them to each other -it also means they have to at the very least redact and censor their own testimony once they're out, lest they betray the trust of *other victims*

Not that I know about other victims pain in this, but it's true. examples: carlanime redacting daydian names, Jenn not being able to speak about things that involve WAG...

Does anyone else think there is something off about this comment? I've suspected for a long time it could have been posted by Andy himself. The comment itself sounds arch, and it describes Andy as "preternaturally intelligent and talented, admirably so" and as having "considerable creativity and skill". Which very much sounds like Andy describing himself.

I was looking up some dates on Thatfucker's tumblr and was surprised to see that he's made MCU-related posts as early as October 2012. I was less surprised to see that he apparently tried to make himself the authority on Captain America. Even less surprised to see that he tried to make people to contact him to get information about what kind of person Steve Rogers really is.

I just spoke to my grandfather’s bingo buddy, Retired Army Lieutenant R. L. from the previous quote about Steve’s sexuality.

But for Steve, he’s a good guy. It’s an after marriage thing, and he’s got a war on. So yeah, he’s got less understanding of sex than a five year old who’s seen a Britney Spears video, and that doesn’t mean he’s not into girls. Andy's tumblr theme doesn't show specific posting dates, so it only says "2 years ago." If that places the post in 2013, though, then he should have been in recovery - I thought once he was in recovery he stated that he no longer did any role playing? But here he posts "I find Castiel to be a nearly orgasmic mental exercise which is why I enjoy RPing him ..."

Do any archiving nonnies have insight on this? I am still very iffy on whether or not he was channeling in SPN fandom or if it was another red herring, but if he admits to RPing then behind-the-scenes channeling seems more likely in my opinion.

So apparently the actors for Neville and Seamus have read Andy's fics DAYD (514 pages) and Sluagh (442 pages), one of them thought DAYD should be the model for the seventh Harry Potter movie, and the other sent Andy a personal note claiming dibs on the role of Seamus if Sluagh is ever made into a film.

Yeah.

What I want to know is why the fuck Andy wasn't crowing about this from the rooftops. For years he never shut up about DAYD. How does the "fact" that the actors for his two lead characters not only read that garbage, but praised it and wrote him about it personally only get mentioned in passing on one day on his tumblr?

Just when you think Andy's lies can't get any more brazen, he manages to dig that hole a little deeper.

This is the first time EVER that I'm hearing of these claims, and they've got to be among the most brazen of Andy's lies. This is golden.

How would you go about proving lies like these, anyway? It isn't like someone can just wander on up and ask the actors straight out.

Also, I'm assuming that if there's even a seedling of truth to these lies it's that someone gave a print-out of his fics to the actors. And that that someone was Andy. Or at least some poor soul he'd pressured into doing it for him.

I think it's far from settled exactly what problem/personality disorder Andy suffers from. Frankly, the way he can stay awake for long, extended period of time pouring himself into fandom stuff only to crash later reminds me of bipolar disorder, and his need for attention reminds me more of HPD than NPD.

Who knows, though, both are just theories. The thing is, I don't think we should act as though it's a settled fact that he has NPD.

You're right -- I shouldn't comment as though it's a fact, and I'm no doctor. What Andy suffers from may never be known; the only thing I feel fairly certain of is that it's not what he claims.

Yeah, I'm going to file this under "probably didn't happen." And if it didn't, this is one of the most vile lies Andy has told yet, because it's a textbook case of him using Brittany's death for sympathy.

What are the laws in the US about this sort of thing re: freedom of information? If I call up the Fairfax Police Department, will they tell me if they have a report filed about this by Andrew Blake (or anyone)? Or if they've ever had a leak of those crime scene photos and/or whether they've actually released them to somebody?

I don't know if they'd release photos of the bodies, but if they don't do that, the Fairfax PD might be very interested to hear someone's claiming they have someone leaking photos of murder victims.
